What we do

VENTILATION AND OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE ENGINEERING

Risk Assessments (HSE)

Health Risk Assessments (HRA) are conducted in line with the provisions of the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 (MHSA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHSA). The assessment is conducted by a suitably qualified and experienced Occupational Hygienist. The Risk Assessment reports are compiled in line with internationally accepted reporting guidelines.

Static Noise Monitoring

Static Noise is measured using a type 1 and/ or type 2 Sound Level Meter (SLM) in line with the provisions documented in the SANS code 10083:2013 guideline which deals with the measurement of noise for hearing conservation purposes. The results obtained from the measurements are calculated and the outcomes are compared to the Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL’s) in order to determine compliance.

Personal Noise Exposure Monitoring (Dosimetry)

Personal noise exposure monitoring is conducted in line with the SANS 10083:2013 for measurement and assessment of occupational noise for hearing conservation purposes. The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHSA), the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 (MHSA) and the SAMHOP Code book for Mines is consulted in the preparation and the management of the occupational health programme involving personal noise monitoring. Measurements are taken using type two Intrinsically Safe (IS) equipment for fiery environment as may be required.

Whole Body Vibration Monitoring

Whole Body Vibration (WBV) surveys are conducted using whole body accelerometer in line with the provisions of the HSE guideline and reference is made to South African National Standards (SANS) (ISO 2631-1:1997).

Hand-Arm Vibration Monitoring

Hand-Arm Vibration (HAV) surveys are conducted using hand-arm vibration accelerometer in line with the provisions of the HSE guideline and Reference is also made to South African National Standards (SANS) (ISO 2631-1:1997).

Hazardous Chemical Substance Monitoring

Hazardous Chemical Substance (HCS) measurements are done in line with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHSA) and Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 (MHSA) using validated methods such as those in the NIOSH Manual for Analytical Methods (NMAM).

Hazardous Biological Agents Survey

Hazardous Biological Agents (HBA’s) surveys are done in line with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 83 of 1992 (OHSA) and Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 (MHSA) using validated methods, including wet and dry surface swab to determine the micro-organisms present, the samples are sent to an approved laboratory for analysis.

Illumination Survey

Illumination surveys are conducted in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHSA), Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 (MHSA) and SANS 10114 - 1 using a Lux Meter.

Emergency Lighting Survey

Emergency lighting surveys are conducted in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1993 and SANS 10114 - 2 Emergency Lighting using a Lux Meter.

Asbestos Abatement Monitoring

Asbestos work is conducted according to the Asbestos Abatement Regulations R1196, November 2020 and HSG 248. Any asbestos work done is in line with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 as amended.

Ventilation

Ventilation surveys are done on surface and underground mining and general ventilation at work premises to determine compliance with the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Substances, 1995, Regulation 12 as well as the Environmental Engineering in South African Mines, ASHRAE of Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHSA), Mine Health and Safety Act 26 of 1996 (MHSA) and Environmental Regulations.

Lead Monitoring

Lead monitoring is measured using a SANS 6164, Lead (inorganic and tetra-alkyl) and HSG 273, Lead Regulations OHSA 85 of 1993 and Mine Health and Safety Act 26 of 1993 (MHSA). The results obtained from the measurements are calculated and compared with Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL) in order to establish compliance.

Ergonomic Survey

Ergonomics Assessment is conducted to determine the level of exposure to the physical and psychological in line with HSE and ACGISH Guidelines along with measurement tools such as the NIOSH Equations, REBA and RULA to list but a few.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Scoping Assessment

Scoping Assessments are done in accordance with the National Environmental Management(NEMA) Act 107 of 1998 and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development(MPRDA) Act 28 of 2002. Prior to any development the scoping phase, is essential in determining overall environmental studies and research required in order to ensure compliance with legal and other requirements.

Basic Assesment

Basic Assessment is done in accordance with the National Environmental Management(NEMA) Act 107 of 1998 and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development(MPRDA) Act 28 of 2002. The Basic assessments will follow depending on the outcome of the scoping assessment and any local government by laws that may warrant the completion of the basic assessment.

Environmental Impact Assessment

Environmental Impact Assessment is done in accordance with the National Environmental Management(NEMA) Act 107 of 1998 and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development(MPRDA) Act 28 of 2002.A Full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will follow depending on the outcome of the scoping assessment and any local government by laws that may warrant the completion of the basic assessment.
